GMDH 6: Understanding Diabetes Chiropractically

So, Although no one has actually emailed me asking me questions about diabetes, I decided to blog a handout i recently made up for an in-office talk. Even if you don't have diabetes, you'll find the information contained here can really be applied to anyone looking to be healthy and prevent disease. I also have prepared a nutritional guide to treating diabetes which is largely taken from neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock's new book "Health and Nutrition Secrets ...that can save your life." If there is interest in that I can either blog it or email it if you request it. Enjoy, hope this helps!

Type II Diabetes is a very serious illness that is a leading killer in modern society. It is recognized when cells lose their ability to take in glucose from the blood. This can create chronic hyperglycemia, which overtime can produce complications such as swelling in the extremities, numbness in the extremities, blindness, and increased susceptibility to heart disease. Acute hyperglycemia can be a medical emergency.

Because of Type II diabetes insult to the nervous system it presents a challenge to the chiropractor. Since the chiropractor's goal is to prevent and correct interference to the nervous system (i.e. subluxation), the Diabetic patient is in part the chiropractic patient. There are many natural ways to address diabetes, but it is best to first understand the patho-physiology behind this chronic illness in order to address it properly.

It is my opinion that there are three main causes of Diabetes.

The constant presence of Glucose

The constant presence of glucose is a major problem with most western diets. Often soft drinks containing high fructose corn syrup accompany every meal. One can of soda contains 38 grams of sugar in this highly concentrated form. This is commonly combined with already sugary meals (pizza, pasta, rice, etc), which is sometimes followed by dessert! Soda is dessert. Also it is often consumed in-between meals, providing a constant supply of simple carbohydrates throughout the day.

Your cells can be come desensitized to the presence of glucose. Normally when a cell encounters glucose it is an opportunity to make energy. Over many generations our genetics have been coded for survival. It is unnatural to have constant blood glucose. And your cells can respond in a very unnatural way, they might leave it alone.

Glucose creates osmotic pressure wherever it goes. Water follows it because of its charge. It is dangerous to keep glucose in the blood because of hyperglycemia, it is also dangerous to have too much inside the cells because it can increase the osmotic pressure so much, that the cell can burst and die. As a defense mechanism, cells will resist the intake of glucose in high amounts. The pancreas will try to "scream" at the cells to get them to take in more glucose. It screams via the way of more insulin. It is a vicious cycle which leads to more desensitization. Still, acute hyperglycemia is the greater threat. The body will try to eliminate blood glucose through the urine, increasing urination and increasing thirst at the same time. Dehydration can occur and it can be deadly.

In this mechanism, cells become desensitized to glucose because of its constant presence, they become desensitized to insulin because of its constant presence, and they die from increased osmotic pressure from too much glucose. When adult onset diabetes finally forms they will die because they are unable to take in glucose at all to produce energy.

Chronic release of Stress Hormones from Sustained Sympathetic Tone

Our bodies are well equipped to respond to threats innately and intelligently. While evading a predator your body will need to make a lot of changes to respond. Appropriately your body's Sympathetic nervous system, "fight or flight" takes over to make the necessary changes in physiology. Among these are:

-Increased Cortisol, Increased Catecholamines, Increased Heart Rate, Increased Vasoconstriction, Increased Blood Pressure, Increased Clotting Factors, Increased Pain Sensitivity, Increased Cholesterol, and Decreased Cell Immunity-

You may look at that list and think, "Well that doesn't seem healthy at all, and that can't be an 'innately intelligent' response to a threat." But if we're going to run away from a tiger, we want an increased heart rate and increased blood pressure; you need to deliver oxygen and glucose fast! You want cortisol present to get glucose out of the liver and into the blood stream so it can get to the muscles in your arms and legs so you can run. And if we aren't so lucky to escape and suffer a wound, you can thank your Innate Intelligence when your clotting factors and cholesterol is already present to help with healing. You don't need your cellular immunity until after the threat has passed, to fight infection.

The problem arises because our bodies don't know the difference between a real threat and a perceived threat, like traffic, a divorce, sitting in a doctor's office, etc. When you combine these stressful situations with a deficiency of movement, and a toxic diet, it's easy to see that many people's bodies are in a state of constant emergency. This system was never meant to be sustained for long periods and as a result, a disease state can sit in, like Diabetes.

Cortisol, for instance, is one of the major stress hormones. It functions to break down glycogen from the liver and distribute it into the blood stream. It also has different effects depending on which type of cell it encounters. In an emergency, your body will send glucose specifically to skeletal muscle. In order to make that happen, it must temporarily shut down other cells' ability to take it up. Over time, the constant presence of cortisol in the blood stream can render many cells unable to ever take in glucose. It desensitizes them, promoting the onset of type II diabetes.

Stress leads to cravings for the substrates of stress hormones, sugar and fat, so it can make…more stress hormones! It is a vicious cycle.

Altered Cell Membrane Structure

Communication with a Cell and the Nervous system takes place at the cell membrane. It is "the organelle of perception," as Dr. Dan Murphy refers to it. It is necessary to the cell membrane to perceive neurotransmitters from the nerve axon, and it is also important the cell's receptors be able to recognize other appropriate stimulus from the body. Key to its ability to perceive is the membrane's fluidity. A fluid cell membrane is better able to carry a charge and participate in signal transduction. And it's also better able to recognize hormones such as insulin to take in glucose.

When saturated fats are used to make up a cell membrane, it can become rigid. When Trans fats are used the membrane becomes very rigid, and its ability to participate in signal transduction is compromised. It's as if you are placing plugs in the ears of the cell. The pancreas might say "Yo Cell, we got some glucose here, and you need to take it in." "What?" "Take in the glucose!" "What??"

You get the idea.

A word about Artificial Sweeteners

A common misconception is that by using artificial sweeteners one can help prevent type II Diabetes. This is simply not true. In fact, the reality is quite the opposite. By consuming artificial sweeteners such as Sucralose, Saccharine, and Aspartame you will promote the onset of Type II Diabetes.

Each time you consume something sweet, artificial or real, it immediately starts a cascade of events that prepares your cells for glucose intake. Among these events are Insulin secretion by the pancreas, and preparing cell membrane receptors. When this happens in the absence of glucose, it can create "confusion" for your cells. For one thing, it takes work to prepare membrane receptors. For another, exposing your cells to insulin in the absence of glucose further desensitizes them. Not to mention it is creating more work for the already fatigued pancreas in the diabetic. When this occurs repeatedly in a chronic diet drink user, it is a lot like "crying wolf" to your cells…eventually, they just start to ignore your cry, they assume nothing's really coming.

When you consider the toxicity involved in a substance like Aspartame (please read "Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills" by Russell Blaylock), it makes very little sense to use artificial sweeteners. It is safer to use sugar, your body knows what it is, and it knows how to deal with it. For the diabetic, water is a great choice. Make it more exciting with some lemon!

Conclusion

Knowing the mechanisms by which Type II Diabetes can occur is very important in regards to prevention and also treatment. Like so many other chronic illnesses Prevention is Cure and Cure is Prevention. What this means is that you can successfully treat Diabetes with the same methods you would use to prevent it. It is possible for someone to cure themselves and relapse many times. In one sense, type II diabetes is a disease that doesn't have to exists, its up to us.
