I has Otoscope
17 March 2010
Recently I had some patients come to me with ear problems. One had come in to get adjusted after being very ill over the weekend. He complained about some ear pain, which had been getting a little better, but wanted to see the doctor. His mom even gave him her credit card so he could do so. "But Jim," I said, "You're at the doctor!" So I brought him into my exam room and got out my otoscope. "Oh, I didn't know you had one of those." I looked into his ears; they were red and irritated for sure, but there was no pus, or swelling--not a very impressive ear infection. Plus, he had been getting better anyway. I adjusted him, gave him some nutritional recommendations and told him to wait a little longer. Sure enough it looked even better and he felt better two days later. No need for a visit to the medical doctor for any (potentially) unnecessary anti-biotics. Note, you can be sure if I had seen anything "gross" that's exactly where I would be sending him.
Another patient who has been with me awhile knows that I do an adjustment for ears. She had felt some pressure in her ears and asked me to perform the adjustment. When she was checking out and telling me how much better her ears felt in the reception area, my other patient who was waiting to be adjusted said "wow, you do more than backs, don't you?"
I do! Chiropractors are primary health-care physicians! You can come to us with any concern, back/neck related or otherwise, and we can do our best to help figure out whats going on, try and help, and if need be, point you in the right direction to get the help you need. The advantage to going to the Chiropractor first, is that you are more likely to get the help you need in a more-conservative, less-invasive fashion.
If you ever want me to look at your ears, I'd be more than happy to.
"Chiropractically" yours,
